Diary Collections

A number of diaries exist which contain references to births, deaths, and marriages of the diarist's family and acquaintances. These can be a very important source of information. Some diaries that contain vital statistics are listed below. Researchers should also consult the manuscript collections of individual repositories, and the following:

  • American Diaries: An Annotated Bibliography of, Written Prior to the Year 1861. By William Matthews. Boston, 1951.
  • Maryland Diaries. By William Matthews.

Individual Diaries

  • The Journal and Family Papers of Rev. John Eversfield - MSA SC 913
  • Diary of John Evans of John, located at Methodist Historical Society, Baltimore. This diary contains entries dating from 1715 into the 19th century.
  • "Diary of William Faris." MHM beginning 28:28:198. REF E-1-
  • "Richard Markland's Copybook." MHM 69:323-326; also MHS MS.570. REF E-1-
  • Thomas Parkin. "Diary of a Baltimorean of the Eighteenth Century." MHM 7:356ff. REF E-1-
  • "Diary of Amos Stonesifer, Commenced March 4, 1857." MGSB 28 (2) 146-200. REF E-2-3
  • Diary of Richard H. Townsend, 3 vols., covering years 1851-1879, typescript, MHS.

Medical Journals

Many physicians kept medical journals in which they noted details of their cases. Since these journals often contained notes on family relationships, they should not be overlooked.
